EAA 1083 February Events

These, as all our events are open to all. Pilots, aircraft owners and aviation enthusiast.  Just come on down and join the fun.  Do to the CAVU (Crappy, Awful, Visibility Under minimums) weather we will reschdule our spot landings for March.  We have Gift Certificates from Aircraft Spruce to award to the winner.

February 4, 2012

For February's First Saturday Lunch we will be doing a spot-landing contest (weather permitting). For those based at Rowan County Airport (KRUQ) we will have a pilot briefing at 10:15 then go out and shoot up to three touch and go landings for scoring.

For those arriving from other airports, pilots call Unicom on downwind to announce N-Number and that you are participating in the contest.  We are working on some really good prizes, check back soon for a list.  Our Members on the ground will score the landings, both for touchdown point and style in case of a tie.  Lunch to follow serving from 11:00 at the EAAgles Nest.

The very open rules are:

1.The closest final touchdown past the strip wins the " 1st Prize" and up to three landings will be judged. In case of ties style points will be awarded.   We will record your landing for reference

2. You can reduce power at any time, but once you make a reduction, any adding of power will disqualify that landing only.

3. A landing bounced before or touching down before the strip disqualifies that landing only from scoring. The final full touchdown will be your scored.

February 14, 2012

For our February Meeting we will have Eddie Shields from the Charlotte FSDO to give a talk on maintenance requirements and regulations of what an owner can and cannot accomplish. Mostly FAR Part 43 and 91.

A dinner will be served at 6:00 for a $5.00 donation and our speaker will go “on stage” at 6:45.  You can reserve a spot at www.FAA.gov/safety.   Again  all are welcome.

Special Guests for our 13th March  Mark Grady and Tom Freeman

Don't miss this opportunity to sharpen your aviation knowledge and skill! This event will feature two seminars specifically designed to educate pilots on common accident causal factors. Refresh your basic piloting skills and operate with confidence in the non-towered airport environment! Click on the link below for all the details.

Seminars

6:30 p.m. - 7:20 p.m. ~ Back-2-Basics Seminar Series- Featuring Mark Grady! This seminar will examine how allowing your basic piloting skills to erode lead to common accident scenarios. Plus, the seminar will take a look at how advanced technology in the cockpit can contribute to the loss of basic skills, if not considered by the pilot.

7:35 p.m. - 8:15 p.m. ~ Non Towered Airport Operations, Tom Freeman, NCDOT Aviation. Operations at non towered airports can be a "danger zone" if pilots are not aware of the hazards that exist in this uncontrolled environment. Mixing with turbojets and light sport aircraft is challenging but can be safe if all pilots observe some simple rules. Find out what you can do to increase your safety margin.

The presenter for the Back2Basics program, Mark Grady is a former recipient of the FAA's Aviation Safety Counselor of the Year in North Carolina and was named AOPA Air Safety Institutes Instructor of the Year.

Tom Freeman, NCDOT Division of Aviation has been an Aviation Safety Specialist for the past 15 years and earned the FAA Silver Level Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) for 2012.
